ASTM F1506 / NFPA 70E

Standard Performance Specification for Flame Resistant and Arc Rated Textile Materials for Wearing Apparel for Use by Electrical Workers Exposed to Momentary Electric Arc and Related Thermal Hazards

The specification is cited for compliance with: OSHA 1910.269, NFPA 70E, and CSA Z462.

ASTM F1506 is a self-certification performance specification intended to supply minimum requirements for apparel used by electrical workers exposed to momentary electric arc and related thermal hazards.

Sample and Test Frequency Requirements

Initial 1506 Testing 12 yards
Flammability Retesting on As-Received Sample (every 5,000 yards) 1 yard from each lot
Retesting of All Other Tests Except Arc* (every 50,000 yards) 4 yards from each lot

*All tests, including arc, must be retested upon a change in the material.

About the Specification

ASTM F1506 includes requirements for material testing and additional information for garments constructed from compliant materials. ArcWear has the capability to perform full testing to ASTM F1506 specifications in OSHA 1910.269, NFPA 70E, and CSA Z462 Standards. Compliance with ASTM F1506 is also required for any hazard greater than 2 cal/cm2 per OSHA 1910.269. While it is not required, ArcWear works with SEI to offer third-party certification for ASTM F1506. This service enables customers to bundle ASTM F1506 and NFPA 2112 certifications and can provide end users with certainty that garments, and facilities used to produce their garments, have met high standards for quality control.

Test Methods in the Specification

Small scale tests for flammability, strength, dimensional change, colorfastness, and a large scale electric arc test are included in the ASTM F1506 specification. Testing is determined based on the construction and intended care of your fabric (laundering or dry cleaning). There are additional requirements specified for the labeling, thread, and closures used for garments made of compliant materials.

Choose the material construction to determine which test methods are necessary.

Retesting Requirements

The large scale arc test (ASTM F1959) is considered a design test. It is only required to be performed on the original material or when changes are made to the material. All other testing in the specification must be repeated on a regular basis; initial flammability every 5,000 yards and strength tests, colorfastness, dimensional change, and post-laundered flammability every 50,000 yards.

ArcWear can help you to achieve ANSI 125 Level 2 through accredited third-party testing, or ANSI 125 Level 3 by working with SEI to issue third-party certification.
